Getting back to running with C25K

More than 4 years ago I needed to get in shape for my upcoming wedding so I started the Couch to 5K running program. I was out of shape and had never run. It was a challenge but I got through the program and ran my 1st 5K- Cincinnati Pig run. Now it's time to get back. I'm older, chubbier, more out of shape and have 2 little boys. All these things present different challenges than 4 years ago. This time I have differnt motivation too. I am doing it for vanity ( we all want to look our best), for health and to set an example for my littles that exercise is a normal and consistent part of our lives. I completed week one and hope to get through the whole program to complete my first 5K as a mami. Wish me luck!

I am a slacker, for sure

Wow now it's been almost 2 years since I last posted anything. The name should be changed to Mami of 2 boys who needs to get in shape. D is almost 3 months old. OMG almost the same age as M was when I last wrote. I am at my max weight ever. Well aside from when I was pregnant. 150 lbs.

Wow! Blast from the past!

I just remembered I had started blogging almost 2 yrs ago. Not sure why it took this long to remember but so many new and exciting things have happened since Dec 2009!
First of all, I have not run in about 10.5 months..but I have a really good reason...........kinda. I had a beautiful baby boy in May so I stopped running when I was about 2 months pregnant. My baby is now 4 months old (today, actually!) and I have very SLOWLY started walking. I tried jogging a couple of days ago and realized how much I want to get back to running and how much hard work I have ahead of me. As much as I thought I would work out while pregnant, I just wasn't motivated and went from weekly yoga to nada ( nothing). Really I could have started working out 6 weeks after my baby was born but again I lacked motivation.

Perhaps remembering this blog and reading my old posts will get me back to working out seriously. Although this time I have a whole new set of challenges including babycare, breastfeeding, a new post baby body and really starting from the very very beginning.

My goal is accountability. I will hold myself acccountable to a workout schedule, better eating habits so I can be the best version of me for my baby boy!

I hate Jillian.......in a good way

So you know how I stated earlier that I was "ok" with my body?? No longer the case. I think I was delusional. Sure I feel stronger and healthier. However, my eating habits are HORRIBLE and exercising does not justify extra helpings of dessert, chocolate or Starbuck's cafe mocha daily. I started to count calories.........EEEK!!!! I was consuming like 2100 calories/day! Then I took pictures, Ay DIOS mio!!!! Not cute. REALITY check! I need to eat better and increase my strength workouts. So I started the 30 day Shred by Jillian Michaels. She is ruthless, hardcore but very effective. Sometimes I yell at her, hate her and want to turn off the DVD but I stick with it for the 27 minutes and in the end blow her a kiss and say "gracias amiga, for kicking my ass ". I wanted to delete those awful pics but decided to keep them to see my before and after. I am still running 3 times a week....hopefully these workouts will improve my endurance and speed too! I have said good-bye to daily dessert ( unless its dark chocolate), indulge in Starbucks only once in a while (with skim milk, skip the whipped cream, por favor) and eat more fruit and veggies. Veremos...we'll see!! Adios!

ARRRRGH!!!

I am so encojonada (pissed off!!!).........I won't go into details but if it wasn't 11:35 pm, I would shoot out the door and go for a long HARD run!! Actually come to think of it, since I started running ( or really jogging since I am so slow) I have never gone for a "pissed off" run-bet it's damn therapeutic!

3,000 calories

That's the average amount Americans consume on Thanksgiving Day. Ay, ay, ay! I can't imagine what the average Dominicano consumes. The usual menu in my family consists of Turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce, pernil (pork shoulder), rice ( of course white...brown is almost sacrilegious), beans, potato salad, some kind of pasta dish, tossed salad ( I think that may be the only vegetables), pastelitos (fried meat pies), lots of dessert including the VERY yummy but fattening flan (custard) and of course your drink of choice...soda, wine or beer. So what's this chica who is an awful cook and lives 5 hours away from all this yumminess to do?........... Enjoy every single morsel and then work her ass off to burn those extra calories and run a 5K the following Saturday to absolve some of the guilt! The "correct" translation for Happy Thanksgiving is "Feliz Dia de Accion de Gracias" ( a bit lengthy IMHO). So I thank my blessings and just say "Feliz Dia del Pabo"- "Happy Turkey Day" to all!!!

Confession

I can't swim. Or ride a bicycle. Or rollerskate. Or ski. Yep. I used to be REALLY embarrassed but I have kinda sorta gotten over the embarrassment, although I will not offer that as a conversation starter. The skiing thing is not so embarrasing-how many Dominicanos do know who ski?? So in an effort to do something about this, I have started swimming lessons. This is my third attempt, I admit I am a swimming class drop-out. This time I am going to stick with it and not allow my embarrassment, nasty instructor or not wanting to wet my "just done" hairdo get in the way. The irony is that now I am actually dedicated, class was cancelled last week and I will be missing it on Thursday....because of course its Thanksgiving. Nevertheless, I give myself an A+ for effort.
